What are cookies?

Cookies are small files that are installed on the hard drive or in the browser of a computer, tablet, smartphone or equivalent device with Internet browsing functions. Among other things, they help to: personalise the services of the website owner, make browsing and using the website easier, obtain aggregated information about website visitors, enable multimedia content to be played and displayed on the website itself, allow interaction between the user and the website, enable security tools, and so on.

Definitions used in this Cookie Policy

  • Data: Information obtained from the user's terminal equipment through the data storage and retrieval device (cookies or others). Data will be personal when it is information about identified or identifiable natural persons, under the terms set out in Article 4 of the GDPR.
  • Aggregated information: non-nominal information, typically numerical, intended to provide statistical information.
  • Terminal equipment: The device from which the user accesses the service, such as a personal computer, a mobile phone, a tablet, etc., and from which the information is obtained.
  • Information society service: Any service provided at the individual request of a user, whether for remuneration or not, at a distance and by electronic means, provided that, for the purposes of this guide, it constitutes an economic activity for the publisher whose provision gives rise to the use of cookies.
  • Publisher: the controller or owner of the website.
  • Third party: an external, collaborating or service-providing entity, or one related to the publisher, involved in the management of some cookies.
  • Cookie controller: the publisher, controller or owner of the website or, in some cases, the third party.
  • Browsing habits: trends shown by the user when browsing a website, such as time spent on the page, parts visited, most frequent sections, origin of the visit and destination of the visit, among others.

What types of cookies are there?

Depending on the entity that manages them:

  • First-party cookies: cookies sent to the user's terminal equipment from a device or domain managed by the publisher itself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
  • Third-party cookies: cookies sent to the user's terminal equipment from a device or domain that is not managed by the publisher but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.

Depending on how long they remain active on the terminal equipment:

  • Session cookies: cookies designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a website. They are usually used to store information that is only relevant for providing the service requested by the user on a single occasion (for example, a list of purchased products) and they disappear when the session ends.
  • Persistent cookies: cookies whose data remain stored on the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the cookie controller, which may range from a few minutes to several years.

Depending on the purpose for which the data obtained through cookies are processed:

  • Technical cookies: cookies that allow the user to browse a website, platform or application and to use the different options or services available on it, including those used by the publisher to manage and operate the website and enable its functions and services, such as controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted areas, remembering the items in an order, completing the purchase process of an order, managing payment, controlling fraud related to the security of the service, applying for registration or participation in an event, counting visits for the purpose of invoicing licences for the software on which the service (website, platform or application) runs, using security features while browsing, storing content for broadcasting video or sound, enabling dynamic content (for example, a loading animation for a text or image) or sharing content through social networks. Due to their technical nature, this category also includes cookies that allow the most efficient management of the advertising spaces that the publisher has included, as one more element of the design or layout of the service offered to the user, on a website, application or platform based on criteria such as the content edited, without collecting user information for other purposes, such as personalising that advertising content or other content.
  • Preference or personalisation cookies: cookies that allow information to be remembered so that the user accesses the service with certain characteristics that may differentiate their experience from that of other users, such as the language, the number of results to be displayed when the user performs a search, the appearance or content of the service depending on the type of browser used to access the service or the region from which the service is accessed, etc.
  • Analytics or measurement cookies: cookies that allow their controller to monitor and analyse the behaviour of users of the websites to which they are linked, including measuring the impact of advertisements. The information collected through this type of cookie is used to measure the activity of websites, applications or platforms in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of the usage data of the service's users.
  • Advertising cookies: cookies that allow the most efficient management of the advertising spaces that, where applicable, the publisher has included on a website, application or platform from which the requested service is provided, based on criteria such as the content edited or the frequency with which the advertisements are displayed.
  • Behavioural advertising cookies: cookies that allow the most efficient management of the advertising spaces that, where applicable, the publisher has included on a website, application or platform from which the requested service is provided. These cookies store information about user behaviour obtained through continuous observation of their browsing habits, which makes it possible to build a specific profile in order to display advertising based on it.
